Royals Leaders 1987:
Scotti Madison was selected by the fans as the Most
Popular Player for 1987. This was a contest sponsored by Malashocks
Diamonds. He led the Omaha Royals in RBI's, Walks and Doubles.
Outfielder Gary Thurmond was selected to receive the Bill Wood Lancer Hustle Award for his play during the 1987 season. He led the team in runs scored, triples and stolen bases. He also played in 27 games with the parent Kansas City Royals and averaged .296 with the parent club.
Infielder Rondin Johnson averaged .254 in 134 games for the Royals. The Bremerton Washington native, played in Omaha in 1985 and 1986 and had a cup of coffee with the parent Royals in 1986.
Joe Cirati averaged .281 as a regular in the Royals infield in 1987.
Jeff Schultz played in 99 games for Omaha in 1987. He averaged .256 while holding down a position in the outfield garden.
Pitchers:
Bill Swaggerty was 10-12 as a pitcher for the Royals in
1987, leading the Royals in both games won and games lost. He also led the
team in complete games with five, shutouts with two, innings pitched with
163.2 and walks. Bill had a four year major league career with the Orioles
from 1982-1986. The 30 year old right handed pitcher returned to Omaha
for the 1988 season.
Steve Shirley led the Royals in the strike out category with 78 k's for the season. He also led the Royals with 44 total appearances during the season. He had a cup of coffee with the Dodgers in 1982.
After an excellent 13-7 season with Memphis in 1986, Israel Sanchez was 5-12 in 1987 with the Royals. The 23 year old lefty from Falcon Lasvias Cuba had a 4.52 ERA in 1987 and returned to Omaha in 1988. He made his major league debut in 1988 and also had a short time with Kansas City in 1990.
Lanky right hander Don Welchel was 7-4 with Omaha in 1987 in 19 appearances. Don had a cup of coffee with Baltimore in 1982 and made 11 appearances with the Orioles in 1983.
Tom Mullen was 8-8 with Omaha in 1987.
Rick Anderson appeared in 6 games with Kansas City in 1987 and in 15 games in Omaha he managed a 6-5 record. He played for the Mets in 1986. He also had 7 appearances in 1987 with the Kansas City Royals.
