Columbus started with great fan support in 1911 with the local paper indicating over 1,000 fans in the stands for the opening game. The town boasted a population of about 5,000.
They wound up in fifth place by the end of the season.
Roster:
John Corbett averaged .257 and played first base.
He started his professional career with Oskaloosa in 1904 and played three
years for Ottumwa and one year for Monmouth before coming to Columbus for
two years.
Porkorney alternated at first and averaged .232.
Bert Graham was a regular at second base and averaged .286. He had a cup of coffee with the Browns in 1910. He played minor league ball for 10 seasons.
Buster Brown played short (.271) and Ed Brown was at third and had a .228 average.
John Corbett averaged .257 and played behind the plate.
Otto Harrison was a 19 year old from Louisville KY. He played in 40 games and averaged .211.
L. Copple alternated with Corbett and averaged .244.
In the outfield was Moxie Meixell who led the team with a .315 average. He was picked up by Sioux City and played 10 games in the class "A" Western League in 1911. The 23 year old from Lake Crystal Minnesota made it to the show in 1912 where he played in 3 games for Cleveland.
Also tending the garden was Martin Chittick. He was in his second year at Columbus. The 22 year old from Stewart Iowa averaged .212. There is one newspaper which reported that he was from Stuart Nebraska.
Agnew averaged .225 in 36 games, , Cecil Weisenberger averaged .279 in 55 games and O. Leach averaged .284 in 98 games.
Pitchers:
Del Delair was 12-10 for the year.
Paul Kissell was the workhorse for the team and had a 17-15 average.
Edwin Paul was 5-6, J. Walworth was 5-7, Spade was 3-7 and Hay was 5-8 for the Discoverers in 1911.
