Born in 1935, Bob Gibson graduated from Technical High School in Omaha Nebraska. He attended Creighton University in Omaha where he was a standout in both baseball and basketball.

He played with the Harlem Globetrotters in 1957 and 1958. He was signed as an amateur free agent by the Cardinals in 1957.

He played for the Omaha Cardinals in 1959 and had a 9-9 record. He also made his major league debut in 1959. He pitched in 13 games and had a 3.32 ERA. He won 20 games five times. He had a 1.12 ERA in 1968. The litany of strikeouts, wins, world series performances, Cy Young awards and gold glove awards all indicate the talent of the individual. In my opinion, he was the best pitcher in baseball. period.

Highly recommended is "Stranger to the Game the Autobiography of Bob Gibson" by Bob Gibson & Lonnie Wheeler. A good book, available on Amazon.

In 2005, a panel of sports experts named Bob Gibson number one in the 100 top Nebraskans in sports.
