Don Gutteridge began his professional career with the Lincoln Links in 1932. He played third base and averaged .325 in 63 games. He returned to Lincoln in 1933. The youngster from Pittsburg Kansas played 27 games at second base, 10 games in the outfield and 66 games at third, batted a league leading .360 for the year. He was named to the Nebraska State League All Star team.
The league had an agreement with the St. Louis Cardinals and Don was acquired by St. Louis at the end of the year and promoted to Houston of the Texas league.
In 1934 he averaged .272 for Houston and was promoted to Columbus for the 1935 season. He averaged .291 in 1935 and .296 in 1936 with Columbus.
He made it to the major leagues in 1936. His career lasted until 1948 and he played for the Cardinals and Browns in St. Louis, Boston in the American League and his final four games were played with Pittsburg. Lifetime he averaged .256 playingin 1151 major league games. He appeared in the 1944 World Series with the Browns and the 1946 World Series with Boston.
He was in the top ten in the majors four times for stolen bases and four time for triples.
From 1948 through 1950 he was a regular with Indianapolis. In 1951 he was 39 years old and named manager of Indianapolis.
Don was the manager for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox in 1952. The Sky Sox were a class "A" farm club for the Chicago White Sox. They came in second place in the Western League but lost in the first round of the playoffs to Omaha.
In 1953 the Sky Sox came in first during the regular season with Don as the manager. They wound up one game ahead of Denver but lost in the first round of the playoffs.
He managed Memphis in 1954, Indianapolis in 1967 and the White Sox in 1969 and 1970.
